FLOODY STEALS ST PATRICK'S DAY LIMELIGHT

John Floody emerged as the St Patrick's Day winner of the sixth leg of the HSI Chippison Spring Tour at Broadmeadows on Thursday.

Already a winner of the Spring Tour at Kildare International, Floody steered another of Paula Rafter's string to a tightly fought contest where 13 of the 51 combinations made it through to the Jump Off.  Floody, this time with PMR Caballero, broke the beams in a time of 35.43 and clear to put them at the head of affairs.

Having gone early in the Jump Off, Young Rider Hayley Dunne claimed the TRI Equestrian Leading Young Rider by finishing second in Thursday's contest.  The pair set the early standard and were only taken when Floody entered the ring however their time of 35.88 was good enough for them to remain in second and put their first points on the board.

Likewise for Deane Rogan, who put his first points on the League Table with Asutrias.  Cian O'Connor's stable jockey has produced some solid results with this new addition to their string and they stopped the clocks in 36.22 to slot into third place overall.

Having finished sixth in the opening leg, Galway Rider Thomas O'Brien got another good result out of David McDermott's Dunsoghley Junior.  This pair won what turned out to be the Final Leg of the 2010 Autumn Grand Prix League at Kill last November and they look set for another good season with a fourth place finish at the Meath venue.

Derek McConnell followed on from his sixth place finish at Killossery just under two weeks ago and he piloted Best Lady into fifth place.  Another of the Young Rider's Edward Doyle Jnr also made his way into the line up with his mother Catherine's Flexing as they finished sixth with a double clear in 40.89.

The HSI Chippison Spring Tour is now nearing the halfway stage and moves to Kernan's Equestrian Centre in Crossmaglen on Sunday for the seventh leg.

YOUNG RIDERS DUNNE AND CLARKE CLAIM WINS AT CAVAN AND MARYVILLE

Gerard Clarke took his second win in succession on the Chippison Spring Tour on Sunday with a win at Cavan while in Maryville it was another Young Rider, Hayley Dunne who claimed her first Grand Prix win.

From 41 starters in Maryville, Dunne beat off 10 Jump Off combination with her mother's T D'Arco.  The 17 year old recorded a time that was just over 2 seconds clear of her nearest pursuer.  Following the class a delighted Dunne commented; ''We got this horse last year and we did alot of flatwork over the winter and it payed off today. I took a chance coming inside to the second fence in the jump off and thankfully it worked out for me. It is brilliant to have a Grand Prix win under my belt''.

Eleven times National Grand Prix League Champion Francis Connors slotted into second with Michael Hayden and Paul O'Shea's Instant Karma.  A new mount for Connors, the Waterford man set a tough standard having been first to go recording 37.85, however, Dunne had the advantage of a late draw and was the only one to finish ahead of Connors.  Connors also placed fifth with Alice Kehoe's Westwinds Cirracruise.

Liam O'Meara took thrid with Mr. Coolcaum while Ger O'Neill took fourth with Z Wellie 72.  Michael Whyte took sixth with his own and Team O.M.S's Up To Date.

Meanwhile in Cavan, the Young Rider's were again to the fore with League Leader Gerard Clarke taking his second win in succession.

Having won last week in Kernan's Equestrian Centre, Clarke this time steered his own 7 Year Old Ardragh Stein to the top spot of an 11 horse jump off.  Clarke's time of 40.88 provided him with a 4 second advantage at the finish.

Capt. Michael Kelly, who was also a winner on two occassions during the Spring Tour, took second with the Minister for Defence's Ringwood Abbey in a time of 44.21.  The Army rider had previously won in Ravensdale and Killosery and is now in hot pursuit of the League Leader Gerard Clarke who is now on 38 points, 7 ahead of Kelly.  Capt. Kelly also took fourth with Lough Foyle.

Christian Coyle took third place with Lumpaci while Young Rider Daniel Coyle, who finished second 3 weeks in succession earlier in the League took fifth with Uptown Girl.  A third Young Rider, James Bleeks finished sixth with Whatever.

Next weekend sees the Chippison Spring Tour head to Wexford for the ninth leg of the Tour at Barnadown.

PERSERVERANCE FINALLY PAYS OFF FOR GERARD CLARKE

Young Rider Gerard Clarke can be well pleased with his work rate to date as he scooped the pickings in the seventh round of the Chippison Spring Tour at Kerman’s. Out of the running for that last three rounds the ten points that he earned has put him at the top of the leader board with 28 points going into next week where two rounds will be staged back to back in Cavan and down south at Maryville Co Cork.

What a day it was for the host and home sponsor, James Kernan, who not only staged a superb show but also posted a great result himself when he took to the saddle on Ben Mullier to come third overall in the competition.

Overjoyed with his placing he said “I’ve only been riding this horse for a week and I have to admit that it is a long time since I have sat on a horse so nice. He loves to jump and gives a great feel. I am really delighted and I think a lot of this horse”

Again no one was left wanting for entertainment this week as the viewing gallery and the resturaunt were packed to capacity with spectators. 31 of the 33 entrants started. International Course designer Tom Holden was at the helm again and set a pretty good task for those who wanted to progress, seeing nine through to the jump off.

It took its toll for some but having said that it was again a good quota with 11 obstacles and 14 efforts split equally into verticals and oxers.

The path finder came in the form of Gabriel Tunney on Ace High Mike who produced the first double clear in a time of 42.56. This was followed by a flashy performance and young rider Gerard Clarke who better the standard by over 6 seconds in a time of 36.50.

Then came the host of the show James Kernan who cut inside fence 9 to approach a new double of fence 7a and b subsequently to come in attacking fence 10 and lacing down the track to fence 11 returning a time of 37.19 which would earn him third place ultimately.

Next in was Derek Mc Connell and Best Lady who was going well looked like he was on the money through the first four fences but what appeared to be a stumble at fence 8 may have cost vital seconds him but nevertheless still came back with a clear in 38.66 which put him 4th in the line up.

Alexander Butler, who moved up in the running in order to give Peter Smyth a chance to warm up his second horse in the jump off, had clearly worked out the advantages to be taken on the course. After the double of 7a and b he took a tight line to 8 and later even a tighter line to the last fence 11b only to catch the back bar, knocking almost a second off the time but 4 faults in a time of 35.56 which gave him 6th place at the end of the day.

Then came Peter Smyth with Mary Barron’s Willem who moved very quickly through the track and flaked down to the last in a time of 37.14 which would ultimately earn him 2nd place for his efforts.

With two to go Dermott Lennon with Arsalla was going rightly only to be caught out by the second last fence no 10 returning with 4 faults in 35.64 but not enough to get him into the line up.

Last to go and with his own time to beat Gerard Clarke and Colorado wasn’t going to better what he had already achieved by having two down in 40.75

It was a great class as it was totally unpredictable as to what the result would be. We saw the new kids on the block taking on the experienced and the track worked in the favour of the new kids …… at least for today. Next week could be a different story but Gerard Clarke can be very pleased with what transpired and for my money this is definitely one to watch. With two rounds being staged next week it will be difficult to predict what the standings will be or if they will affected at all.

At the half way stage now it has proven on many aspects to be an exciting series this year.

HSI Chippison Spring Tour 2011 - Kill International
Minimize

Paddy O’Donnell from Fenor, Co.Waterford, took the honours in the fifth round of the Chippison Spring tour at Kill International. Displaying all the style and craft that he produced at the Failte Ireland Show in Dublin last year when he won the opening International Speed Class, he snatched victory in a gutsy performance which he richly deserved. Riding Thomas Power’s ‘Harristown Princess’, O’Donnell saw off challenges from the likes of National Speed Champion Ger O’Neill and the highly experienced Edward Doyle to name but a few.

It was a large entry, in fact the largest this series so far, which saw 85 of the original 98 start with 18 getting though to he jump off. International Course Designer Tom Holden was happy with that outcome as he built a track that was well within the specified height but one had to work hard on the distances. He commented “again I have built no larger than 136cms with the majority of the obstacles standing at 135cms and spreads of 145cms. But it will be testing enough so the riders will have to read their distances accordingly”

Indeed they did and it wasn’t only the less experienced who had difficulty reading the track. But having said that 18 going through was pretty representative of the fact that the track, whilst a test, was fair and produced an interesting spectacle for the spectators which can be difficult with such big entries.

The standard setter was Ger O ‘Neill and Z Welle 72 who came back clear in a time of 38.65. Next in was 11 times National Champion Francis Connors with Michael Hayden & Paul O’Shea’s Instant Karma posting a clear in 40.07. The next four in all picked up faults trying to break O’ Neill’s target until seventh in Edward Doyle riding Clipper Van de Begijnakker shaved the guts of three seconds off the time with a clear in 35.30.

It was next in to Doyle, Paddy O’Donnell, who took off from the start like a greyhound out the traps. A quick look around of the gallery saw them all on the edge of their seats a he cut corners and took strides out to make up the time. He certainly was moving very quickly coming down to the last beating Doyle’s time by nearly three more seconds coming home clear in 32.56.
Three more horses followed but could not get close to the new standard as Ger O’Neill came in to challenge with Cassidee and looked every bit like matching but could only produce a clear in 34.16.

Former world champion Dermott Lennon also had a cut with Alvarez and was pretty quick too returning a clear in 33.62 putting the time closer to the one being held by O’Donnell.
With five to go the first three put in times of 34.55, 47.18 and Young Rider Daniel Coyle riding Linzi Johnston’s Uptown Girl became the closest to the leader with a clear in 33.40. Another good day at the office for Coyle as he took second place and his third best young rider prize of the series.
The last two to go were Gerard Clarke and Colorado and Capt Michael Kelly with Lough Foyle but both failed to make the cut leaving it to Paddy O’Donnell and Harristown Princess to seal the deal in this round.

Afterwards he said: “We’ve had this mare since she was broken, and I’m delighted with her. This was a really hot class and I’d say that it’s the fastest that I have ever gone with her, including Dublin. It’s her first outing this season and I plan to compete in one or two more.”
In the end its going to make some changes to the leader board and after his placing today it will put Daniel Coyle at the top as we move to Broadmeadows on Thursday, St Patrick’s Day and then to the North at Kernan’s on Sunday 20th of March.

MICHAEL KELLY AND LOUGH FOYLE MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW

It was the combination of Capt Michael Kelly and Lough Foyle which provided the spectacle and it was exciting to witness their success for the second time a week apart when winning at Killossery Lodge on Sunday in the fourth leg of the HSI Chippison Spring Tour.

Capt Kelly quite moved by his win said; “I am very happy about the win today and having a back to back with the win at Ravensdale last week. This mare is improving week on week and is going from strength to strength. The Army Equitation School are very fortunate to have at its disposal two very good horses, which are both leased from Kathleen Gallagher. Her other is River Foyle, which I hold in equal regard to Lough Foyle, who won again this week”

Kelly has found Killossery a happy hunting ground as he also claimed a leg of the Kingsland Autumn Grand Prix League at the venue last October.  He now leads the Chippison Spring Tour on 23 points, 5 ahead of the TRI Leading Young Rider Gerard Clarke.

Equally exuberant was International Course designer and co host at Killossery Frank Glynn who said, “I was really happy with this competition today. The track was 130 in height and in some cases 145 wide and saw 17 of the 45 starters into the jump off which was in and around my expectation”.

The first four in could not get to grips with the challenge of the changed track until Tara Dunne with Touched Up set he standard of a clear in 33.73. She held that lead for a further four horses, that was until Edward Doyle entered the ring with Clipper Van de Begijnakker to steal the show with a clear in 32.02.

That was subsequently to be broken by Linzi Johnston’s Uptown Girl ridden by talented Young Rider Daniel Coyle who returned a clear round in a time of 31.06.  This ensured that he claimed the TRI Leading Young Rider on the day for the second week in a row.  He finished second to Kelly also at Ravensdale.

One would not have been blamed for thinking that this display would be enough to rattle the cage of the less experienced. Not true as Capt Michael Kelly threw in his penny’s worth by punching with a very credible clear round in a time of 30.36

There it stayed permitting last weeks winner take the spoils again. With hot contender Young Rider Gerard Clarke last to go despite a spirited performance he caught the second part of the double to lose out on taking third slot.

So can Michael Kelly produce a hat trick?  Who knows but it’s going to make for interesting competition next week as we move to Kill International for the fifth round of the Chippison Spring Tour.
