3 IRISH RIDERS CONFIRMED FOR WORLD CUP FINAL IN GENEVA

WITH Jessica Kurten confirming her position as favourite to win April's Rolex FEI World Cup Final in Geneva after a second place finish in the Netherlands today (Sunday) put her at the top of the Western European League, Ireland now has three contenders bidding for show jumping's elite prize.

Co. Down's Dermott Lennon, himself a former World Champion, puts his hat in the ring for World Cup glory with an 18th place qualifying position after today's last competition in the 2009/2010 series at 's-Hertogenbosch decided the Western European rankings, while in the US Offaly-born Darragh Kenny has already booked his ticket to Geneva as one of the top seven in America's hotly-contested East Coast league.

The Swiss Final will bring together the world's biggest show jumping stars from 13 different leagues, with qualifying positions decided through 132 preliminary competitions.

Jessica Kurten last featured in the World Cup Final top ten in 2008 when she took an equal fourth on Lady Georgina Forbes's 'Castle Forbes Libertina' at Gothenburg, but was runner-up on the same mare in Kuala Lumpur in 2006. The only other Irish riders to have ever finished in the annual World Cup Final top three were Trevor Coyle and his second place with the famous Irish-bred stallion 'Cruising' in 1999 at Gothenburg, and before that Eddie Macken with 'Carroll's of Dundalk', who took an equal third place 20 years before, again at Gothenburg.

O'SHEA WINS THE OPENING LEG OF THE PREMIER SERIES

It was an exciting start to the SJI Premier Series at Louth County this weekend, as thirty riders took on the Tom Holden built course today (Sunday) after earning their place in the qualifying round the day before in the one round speed class.

Winner of the final round of HSI Chippison Spring Tour Grand Prix Coilog last Sunday, Limerick native Paul O’ Shea, travelled from his base in Dublin with Michael Hayden's nine-year-old Belgian bred Primo De Revel to lead the field in the €12,000 Horsewear sponsored class.  Using his last to go advantage, O’ Shea, delivered one of only two double clear rounds of the class, and clocked the winning time of 42.56.

Speaking afterwards, the winner commented:  “The horse jumped really well and it was a great course.  Michael Hayden bought the horse through Trevor Coyle as a six-year old and he has shown a lot of potential. I had this horse on the Sunshine Tour and he went really well, but my plan was to always aim him at the Premier Series. I just really went for it today and I thought even if I had one down, if I was fast enough I could still take second place”.

Meath rider, Alexander Butler looked up for the challenge and set the target when delivering the first double clear with Harold McGahern’s Will Wimble. The pairings time of 43.95 only proved good enough for the runner-up spot as last in Paul O’Shea shaved fractions off his earlier target. Similar to O’ Shea, Butler has demonstrated good form on the international circuit of late, clocking up a series of placing’s in Villeneuve-Lobet before returning home to take the honours in the HSI Chippison in Barnadown last month.

A multiple winner on the circuit last year, Trevor Breen on board Karen Swann’s Adventure De Kannan was up on time in 41.31 but had one fence on the floor for third, while Joan Greene and Tim O'Shea’s Biscaya D'Eversem accounted for fourth place when the combination crossed the line also on four faults, in a time of 42.78.
Mervyn Clarke riding his mother Pauline’s Big Boy slotted into fifth place, while current HSI Chippison League winner, John Floody claimed sixth with Michael Smith’s Larkhill Cruiser.

FLOODY TAKES HSI CHIPPISON TOUR TITLE, O'SHEA WINS GRAND PRIX

MEATH'S John Floody finally secured the HSI Chippison Spring Tour Leading Rider title this evening (Sunday) at Coilog Equestrian Centre in Co. Kildare with a Grand Prix second place on Michael Smith's nine year-old gelding 'Larkhill Cruiser'.

The runner-up spot, behind today's winner Paul O'Shea and 'Day Dream St Ghyvan Z', yielded sufficient points to take the Slane rider well clear of his nearest challenger Ger O'Neill, who placed fifth at Coilog with Paul O'Byrne's 'Cassidee'.

Floody ended the 13-leg series with 56 points, while O'Neill had 36.5.

Afterwards Floody said: "I'm absolutely delighted. Ger O'Neill put me under terrific pressure with two horses going clear today, but 'Larkhill Cruiser' coped very well with the pressure and I'm very happy with him."

The HSI Chippison 2010 Spring Tour Young Rider title went to Conor Drain, with 'Larkhill Cruiser' taking the Leading Irish Sport Horse award and Jim Monks's 'Ashbourne' receiving the Leading Horse trophy.

FLOODY TAKES VICTORY IN CLARE HSI CHIPPISON GRAND PRIX

MEATH'S John Floody set his sights firmly on the HSI Chippison Spring Tour title when finishing first in the penultimate leg of the series in Clare Equestrian Centre, Co. Clare today (Sunday) with Michael Smith's Irish-bred gelding 'Larkhill Cruiser'.

With three wins already under his belt, but victories eluding him on his most recent Chippison outings, the Newgrange-based rider said this afternoon: "I've been knocking on the door very hard, and I'm really delighted to have succeeded today."

Floody now sits on top of the leaderboard with 44 points ahead of next Sunday's HSI Chippison Spring Tour Final in Coilog Eventing, Co. Kildare.

Second-placed Cian O'Connor will be absent on international duty next week, so Floody will face a challenge from third-ranked Ger O'Neill, who finished fourth today on Jane O'Flynn's Irish-bred 'Kinnagrelly', and is now 14 points behind the leader. Points-and-a-half will be allocated for the Kildare final, so O'Neill is still within striking distance of the title.

Second place at Clare went to Sinead Kennedy on her father Bill's Irish-bred 'KEC Alicante', with Floody himself taking third place on Jim Monks's 'Ashbourne', who now moves into first on the tour's Leading Horse ranking.

With five Irish-bred horses and four Young Riders in the top six this evening, it was Lt. Michael Kelly and the Minister for Defence's Irish-bred 'Lough Foyle' who took the runner-up spot, just one-and-a-half seconds adrift of the Longford-born winner.

MEATH-based Cian O'Connor was the man in the Easter Monday limelight at Warrington Equestrian Centre in Co. Kilkenny this afternoon, with two horses in the top six of the HSI Chippison Grand Prix.

And it was Stephen O'Connor and Castlemartin Stud's 13 year-old gelding 'Complete' who took away the winner's rosette after stopping the clock in the 16-horse jump-off round almost two seconds clear of Tralee runner-up Sinead Kennedy on her father Bill Kennedy's Irish-bred 'KEC Alicante'.

Cian O'Connor said afterwards: "I'm delighted with 'Complete', he's obviously a very experienced horse and this Grand Prix will prepare him for international duty, on which he heads off next week. It was a very smooth jump-off round and he went well within himself. I'm also excited about my new horse 'K Club Lady', who jumped a double clear here today and finished in sixth."
