Broderick claims victory at Ballinasloe

Greg Broderick took the victory in this week’s Showjumping Ireland National Grand Prix round, triumphing with Dabelle in Saturday’s €5,000 feature class at Ballinasloe Showgroundskindly sponsored by Devenish and Rumbles Catering.

While Broderick has been on form in this season’s New Heights Championships Series, establishing an early lead with two wins to date, this was the reigning National Champion’s first victory in the Showjumping Ireland National Grand Prix League.

Paul Duffy set the challenge for the 41 starting combinations with a total of 14 completing the first round on a zero score. Two subsequently withdrew leaving an even 12 through to contest the jump-off.

Broderick knew exactly what route offered the quickest way home and set a time of 42.20 seconds which not one of the other competitors could catch.

A new mount to Broderick’s Ballypatrick Stables this year, the nine-year-old Dabelle is by Nabab de Reve out of the Chin Chin-sired dam Ta Belle Van Sombeke. Previously campaigned up to 1.40m level by German rider Theresa Kamps, the mare spent the beginning of this season under Darragh Ryan in Vejer de la Frontera before Broderick took over the ride.

Broderick ensured a successful day when also taking fourth place with the Armitage-sired Delight M-G C De Leuze, faultless in a more sedate time of 47.97.

Jake Hunter was the only rider to come within striking distance of Broderick’s winning time to secure the runner-up position. Partnering Sandra Duffy’s Chiricco 2, the Australianstopped the clock at 42.82 which also guaranteed a €100 TRI Equestrian voucher as the highest placed young rider. Another recent import, Hunter only took up the reins on the 12-year-old Chin Chin-sired gelding last month.

Tim MacDonagh claimed the yellow rosette with the eight-year-old Castlelawn Galloway-sired Hollypark Galloway, clear in a time of 47.76.

Young Rider Cian Harrison made his National Grand Prix debut with new mount Tabby. Aiming for a steady clear, Harrison steered the 13-year-old Captain Clover-sired gelding home in a time of 51.17.

Jessica Burke, the winner of last week’s round at Cavan E.C with Clonguish Vivaro, once again made the line-up this time aboard CC Captain Cruise. The first combination to contest the clocked round, Burke and the Captain Clover stallion logged a time of 53.32 which would prove good enough for eventual sixth place.
