| | IRELAND EQUAL SECOND IN US NATIONS' CUP
28/02/09 IRISH riders delivered a top-notch performance at the USA Nations' Cup in Wellington, Florida last night (Friday) to claim equal second place with Britain, and with just one penalty point separating them from winners Canada.
Irish Team Manager Robert Splaine said afterwards: "We did not go into this competition as favourites, and indeed I was here mainly to assess the performance of our US-based riders for later in the year, but the team produced a truly excellent result against some top opposition. At the end we tied with the British team and even the US team trailed us by four penalty points."
Both former Olympian Kevin Babington from Carrick-on-Suir with 'Souvenir' and Cork's Shane Sweetnam on 'Amaretto d'Arco' produced clear rounds first time out, but each collected four faults in the Cup's second round.
Sligo's Darragh Kerins on 'Night Train' dropped a single pole in both rounds, while Richie Moloney with 'Triviant' was the discard score with 12 faults in the first round, and did not jump in the second.
Ireland and Britain both finished on 16 faults, with a strongly fancied Canadian team lifting the Nations' Cup trophy with 15 penalties. The USA fielded some of its top riders for the competition, but its team ended up in fourth place on 20 faults.

| | KURTEN TENTH, LYNCH 11TH IN SWEDISH WORLD CUP QUALIFIER
22/02/09 SCANDINAVIAN competitors dominated the top end of the World Cup class leaderboard at Gothenburg, Sweden today (Sunday), leaving Ireland's two contenders with tenth and 11th place after collecting four faults each in the first round.
Swedish outsider Svante Johansson, currently ranked 161st in the world, took first place in the four-horse jump-off, with Denmark's Thomas Velin and Sweden's Rolf-Goran Bengtsson collecting prize money for second and third place, respectively.
Ireland's Jessica Kurten and Lady Georgina Forbes's 'Castle Forbes Libertina' and Denis Lynch with Flaminia Straumann's 'Nabab's Son' were just two of the world's top 30 riders who failed to go clear in Gothenburg's first round today, with Kurten picking up 1300 euro for her eventual tenth place, but Lynch finding himself just outside the prize money in 11th position.
Following her tenth place at Gothenburg today, 39 year-old Jessica Kurten now climbs back to tenth position in the Rolex World Cup rankings from a previous 16th place following Vigo's qualifying competition in Spain last weekend.
IRISH SNATCH TWO MORE WINS ON SUNSHINE TOUR
21/02/09 WEXFORD'S Dave Quigley picked up his second win in a row at the Spanish Sunshine Tour near Cadiz today (Saturday) while Cian O'Connor notched up his first victory of the show.
This was the second day that Irish riders claimed two classes at the three-star event, and although Paul O'Shea failed to repeat his Friday win, he was just two places behind Quigley in the Accumulator class.
Meath-based O'Connor steered Joe Sloane's 13 year-old mare 'ABC Loreen' to a win in the speed class, comfortably seeing off British runner-up Robert Maguire with almost two seconds in hand.
Thirty six year-old Quigley brought out Charles Britton's 'Sabatini' for its second win in 24 hours in the Accumulator competition, and Paul O'Shea - who tasted victory with 'Shannondale Macalla' yesterday - slotted Ronnie Hollinger's 'Camiro de Haar Z' into third.
In the big 1m50 Accumulator class, meanwhile, Ivan Dalton managed a tenth place this evening with 'Uline'.
O'SHEA, QUIGLEY VICTORIOUS ON SUNSHINE TOUR 20/02/09 IRISH riders notched up two wins at the Spanish Sunshine Tour near Cadiz, Spain today (Friday).
Limerick-born Paul O'Shea piloted the Irish-bred 'Shannondale Macalla' to victory in the 1m45 class, just over a second clear of New Zealand runner-up Samantha McIntosh, while earlier Wexford's Dave Quigley took first place in the 1m40 competition against the clock.
Quigley, riding 'Sabatini', triumphed in a field of over a hundred starters, but his win was narrower than O'Shea's, with just a fifth of a second separating him from Argentinean challenger Fidel Segovia.
A total of 13 Irish riders are competing in the Spanish Sunshine Tour, which runs until next month at Vejer de la Frontera. With Thanks to HSI Press Office. |

| | IRISH TAKE FOURTH AND FIFTH IN FLORIDA TWO of Ireland's US-based riders at the three-star World Cup show in Wellington Florida this evening (Thursday) finished in the Challenge Cup top five.
Carrick-on-Suir's Kevin Babington steered 'Souvenir' into fourth place in what was the fifth round of the WEF Challenge Cup, with 17 riders going through to the jump-off in what American commentators called 'unseasonably chilly' conditions, the temperature gauge showing 14 degrees centigrade.
Sligo-born Darragh Kerins was just half a second behind Babington in the jump-off with 'Night Train', to claim fifth, but both were over two seconds off the pace of Canadian Olympic Gold Medallist Eric Lamaze, who took the trophy at Wellington with the Dutch Warmblood mare 'Take Off', his second such victory in two weeks. WorldWide action for Irish Riders this weekend.
The World Cup Grand Prix takes place at the Florida show on Saturday night. Jessica Kurten and Denis Lynch travel to Bordeaux, France on Thursday , following their outing at Nantes last weekend.
The 300 kilometre journey also sees them step up from Nantes's three-star to Bordeaux's five-star World Cup level, with the attendant rise in both fence heights and prize money.
Lynch will bring out his top horse, Flaminia Straumann's 'Lantinus', for the event, as well as 'First Love' and 'Abbervail Van Het Dingeshof'. Kurten, meanwhile, travels down France's west coast with the mares 'Miribel D’Auvray', 'Quibell' and 'Castle Forbes Cosma', along with the chestnut stallion Carrick 8.
In Italy, Ireland's Damien Dixon, Niall Talbot and Kevin Thornton line out for Manerbio's two-star show with ten horses between them.
Over in Florida, US-based Irish riders will take part in the continuing Winter Equestrian Festival in sunny Wellington. The contingent competing in the three-star World Cup event includes Shane Sweetnam, Darragh Kerins and former Olympian Kevin Babington. Sweetnam lines out with 'Amaretto d'Arco' and 'Rolette', while Kerins will ride 'Night Train' and Babington 'Souvenir'. MEYDAN NEW TITLE SPONSOR OF FEI NATIONS CUP SERIES
THE DEVELOPER of the biggest equestrian sporting venue in the world, Meydan Group, and the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) have announced a major new agreement for 2009 for title sponsorship of the historic Nations Cup Series, Jumping’s premier team competition, to be known as Meydan FEI Nations Cup Series.
Jewel in the crown of the FEI, the Meydan FEI Nations Cup will feature the ten best national Jumping teams in the world competing at eight of the best venues throughout Europe with a final at the world famous Dublin Horse Show in August this year.
Meydan Group LLC (Limited Liability Company) is the name behind the development of the United Arab Emirate’s landmark racecourse, the iconic new green 67 million square feet, state of the art development whose vision is to be ‘the lungs of Dubai’ and its environmental voice has the horse at its very heart.
The magnificent setting is to be home to the 2010 Dubai World Cup, with a state of the art racetrack and also featuring an equestrian resort as part of a major business and conference district.
Mr. Saeed Bin Humaid Al-Tayer, Chairman of Meydan said: “The Meydan FEI Nations Cup is an exceptional opportunity for us to promote Meydan as the heartland of the business and horse world in the East.
Through our partnership with the FEI we will be able to share the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum with the wider horse sport community, a vision of Meydan as a venue like no other sporting arena in the world.
The synergy between Meydan and the highest quality team Jumping competition in the world is perfect and we look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship, which we hope to build on for the future.”
President of the FEI, HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein said “‘Meydan’ itself is an Arabic word, which translated literally in English to mean, ‘the arena’, in Arabic, a meeting place where people come to discuss, compete and achieve. An environment that encourages competition and co-operation to live side by side in harmony. A habitat created to promote excellence and fair play in sport, commerce, life and much more. The match is perfect for everything that we collectively aim to achieve.”
Secretary General of the FEI, Alexander McLin said “The FEI is thrilled to welcome Meydan as the platinum title sponsor for this top level series which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. This partnership reflects the potential of the series and ensures a bright future for all involved with the sport.
We are thrilled at the prospect that we have been recognised as the vehicle to represent great companies like Meydan, whose ambition is to be acknowledged as being leaders in environmental development through equestrian sport.
I hope that the announcement of our partnership with Meydan, will also give encouragement to equestrian sport and the racing world, by showing that although these are challenging times they are not impossible.”
Carsten Couchouron, Executive Commercial Director of the FEI said “A new partnership of this calibre, secured despite the current economic climate, will allow us to improve the product and propel the strategy of the series to new heights. We are excited to be associated with this visionary concept championed by Meydan and look forward to a fruitful partnership LYNCH TAKES SEVENTH IN NANTES GRAND PRIX IRELAND'S two riders at Nantes in France failed to clinch a victory this weekend, but tonight's (Sunday) Grand Prix saw Tipperary's Denis Lynch take his share of the prize money when finishing seventh on Flaminia Straumann's 'Nabab's Son'.
Lynch, who also had a runner-up spot with the gelding in Friday's big jump-off class, collected 1200 euro for his three-star Grand Prix place after lowering one pole in the first round.
Only Belgian winner Vincent Lambrecht and 'Cashmira' managed a double clear round from the starting field of 40, with Germany's Toni Hassman in second with a faster jump-off round, but four faults on the board. Lambrecht's reward for first place was 10,000 euro.
Ireland's other representative at Nantes, Jessica Kurten, retired from the main Grand Prix but was tenth in the Ladies' Grand Prix this morning on the mare 'Mirabel d'Auvray', and had a sixth place with 'Castle Forbes Cadeau Z' in Friday's jump-off.

| | TWOMEY TRIUMPHANT IN DUTCH GRAND PRIX
25/01/09 CORK-born Billy Twomey took a 25,000 euro prize for his victory in this afternoon's Grand Prix at Amsterdam, the Netherlands, riding his own nine year-old stallion 'Je t'Aime Flamenco'.
The 31 year-old Cheshire-based rider was one of ten to go clear from the first round's starting field of 45, and flashed across the line just under a second ahead of Italian challenger Gianni Govoni.
Twomey's Dutch victory came only an hour after a spectacular second-in-a-row World Cup Qualifier win by Ireland's Jessica Kurten at the five-star show in Zurich, Switzerland.
Afterwards, Ireland's Show Jumping Team Manager Robert Splaine said: "This has been a phenomenal week in the sport for the Irish, with our riders claiming the two top prizes in Europe on one day." KURTEN WINS ROLEX FEI WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AT ZURICH
25/01/09 IRELAND'S Jessica Kurten produced her second consecutive World Cup Qualifier win when she triumphed at Zurich in Switzerland this afternoon (Sunday) with Lady Georgina Forbes's talented 13 year-old mare 'Castle Forbes Libertina'.
Kurten picks up 20 points for her win today, and added to the 20 already on her card following her World Cup Qualifier win at Leipzig, Germany last Sunday, she is now very much in the frame to be one of the world's top 18 riders to battle for the Show Jumping World Cup in Las Vegas this April.
One of 15 horse and rider combinations to make it through to the jump-off at Zurich today, the 39 year-old Antrim-born rider set a time of 32.17 seconds that proved impossible to beat, Finland's Mikael Forsten coming closest, finishing one-and-a-half seconds slower than the Irish rider.
Kurten collected a Mercedes car for her win this afternoon, but the 20 qualifying points may prove a bigger prize, allowing her to have another chance at winning the coveted Rolex FEI World Cup. She was equal fourth in the World Cup final at Gothenburg, Sweden last year, but came closest when finishing second to Germany's Marcus Ehning at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2006. Tellingly, Kurten beat Ehning into third place at Zurich today.
KURTEN TAKES THIRD IN ZURICH SWISS MASTERS 23/01/09 A FIGHTING attempt on the Mercedes Swiss Master title tonight (Friday) in Zurich left Ireland's Jessica Kurten in third place with a prize purse of just over 6,000 euro.
One of just 15 to qualify from two previous competitions at the five-star venue, the 39 year-old Cullybacker-born Kurten was up against some of the sport's top names, and was one of just four to make it through to the jump-off.
Riding Lady Georgina Forbes's gifted 13 year-old mare 'Castle Forbes Libertina', the German-based rider was just less than a second off the pace of Swedish victor Rolf-Goran Bengtsson on 'Quintero la Silla'.
However, Kurten will be concentrating her firepower with 'Libertina' on Sunday's World Cup Qualifier at Zurich. To be sure of a place in the World Cup Final at Las Vegas in April, the Irish rider needs to add to the 20 points she has on the current leaderboard after her win at Leipzig last week. TWO TOP FIVES FOR TWOMEY AT AMSTERDAM
23/01/09 CORK'S Billy Twomey showed he meant business at the four -star show in Amsterdam tonight (Friday) with two top five places.
A runner-up spot on Carron Nicol's nine year-old mare 'Fantasia' came early in the evening in the 1m40 speed competition, and a few hours later when the fence heights went up for the two phase competition, the 31 year-old Cheshire-based Corkman brought out 'Goldex', the bay stallion whose ownership he shares with Sue Davies.
With the first round allowing 22 combinations go clear, Twomey was up against strong opposition in the speed phase, and managed a creditable fourth, with only fractions of a second separating the top five finishers. Germany's Christian Ahlmann eventually took the trophy on the bay gelding 'Sebastian 89'.
KURTEN FIFTH IN SWISS TWO PHASE
23/01/09 IRELAND'S Jessica Kurten cemented her place at tonight's (Friday) big Mercedes Swiss Masters competition at the World Cup show in Zurich, Switzerland when she added a fifth place in today's qualifying competition to her Grand Prix points from Thursday night.
The 39 year-old Munster-based rider fielded Lady Georgina Forbes's mare 'Quibell' in this afternoon's Two-Phase competition and went clear in the final round in a time of 34.03 seconds, not quite fast enough to catch British winner Ben Maher and 'Wonderboy III', but enough to gain her a favourable starting position tonight when put alongside the points gained in the other Masters' qualifying competition - yesterday's Rolex Grand Prix, where she took eighth place with the top Forbes mare 'Castle Forbes Libertina'.
Antrim-born Kurten is joined at Zurich by 23 year-old Tipperary rider Thomas Ryan, who finished 11th in Thursday's Grand prix with 'Urleven van de Helle'.
The main event of the weekend, the Zurich World Cup Qualifier, will be held on Sunday afternoon.

| | KURTEN WINS LEIPZIG GRAND PRIX, O'CONNOR THIRD
18/01/09 IN A THRILLING finish to the Grand Prix at Leipzig today (Sunday), Ireland took both first and third places, with Jessica Kurten claiming the 33,000 euro winner's prize and Cian O'Connor taking third place.
Kurten brought out Lady Moira Forbes's mare 'Castle Forbes Libertina' for the feature contest of the World Cup show, and was one of 13 combinations to qualify for the jump-off from a starting field of 39 top international horses. The 39 year-old Munster-based rider rode a cool foot-perfect round to record the fastest time, beating the Netherlands' Gerco Schoder into second place by a seventh of a second.
Dublin-born O'Connor, meanwhile, was not far behind on Aileen Bryan's 11 year-old bay gelding 'Rancorrado', again delivering a fault-free round to take third overall.
O'Connor and Kurten chalked up an impressive series of top ten finishes for Ireland during the Leipzig weekend, with Meath-based O'Connor adding a seventh, a fourth and a second place to today's Grand Prix placing, while Kurten was second in the Young Horse Final and also had a seventh, a sixth, a fifth and a fourth place during the three days of competition.
SWEETNAM SECOND IN US WORLD CUP QUALIFIER
18/01/09 IRELAND'S Shane Sweetnam saw off the cream of American talent last night (Saturday) when he secured second place in the World Cup Qualifier at Green Cove Springs in Florida.
The Cork-born rider, who is now based in the US, recorded one of only two double clear rounds in the 33-strong field on 'Amaretto d'Arco', but was unable to catch Brazil's Olympic champion 'Rodrigo Pessoa', who set a blistering pace in the jump-off to take the winner's trophy with 'Let's Fly'.
The USA's Kent Farrington lowered a pole for four faults in his attempt to overtake the leaders, and though clocking a faster time had to settle for third overall.
Sweetnam, who celebrates his 28th birthday tomorrow (Monday), earned 22,000 dollars for his night's work, while Pessoa picked up 33,000.
The Green Cove Springs World Cup Qualifier was part of the Jacksonville Horse Show. |

JOHN Floody from Newgrange was the winner of the second leg of the HSI Guidam Spring Tour today at Cavan Equestrian Centre, Co. Cavan with a double clear round in a time of 50.98 on Tony Noble's mare 'Slightly Bonkers'.
Just three combinations went through to the Grand Prix jump-off on Stuart Clarke's course from a startlist of 51.
Floody, who took sixth place with the same horse at last week's first leg of the Guidam League at Ravensdale, Co. Louth, was delighted with his win today and said afterwards: "The mare's been a tricky project. We're moving her into 1m40 classes soon, but it's been hard work, though I have to say the hard work paid off at Cavan today. We have high hopes for her, so you might be seeing more of us soon!"
Anne Marie Fitzpatrick took the runner-up spot today with 'Finders Keepers', and recorded the only other double clear round. Gerard Campbell had two fences down with 'Catch Me If You Can' in the jump-off to claim third place.
14 Year old Shannon McKenzie was unlucky not to be fourth into the jump off with a single time fault. This was McKenzie's first horse Grand Prix and there is surely more to come from the well known pony rider.
Fellow northern rider Eoin Gallagher cemented his place on the leaderboard after taking joint third in Ravensdale last week, he continues his good start to the season with a fifth spot on Dermott Lennon's Java magic.
Taking sixth was Longford rider Robert Harrison on his new recruit Team Harmony Chelto Z.
TRI Equestrian Young Rider Winner was Shannon McKenzie who took fourth with Artasooly.

| | DRAIN TAKES A ONE-TWO IN FIRST LEG OF HSI GUIDAM SPRING TOUR OF 2009
SIXTEEN year-old Conor Drain was the winner of the first leg of the HSI Guidam Spring Tour today (Sunday) at Niall Connolly’s Ravensdale Centre outside Dundalk, Co. Louth with a double clear round in a time of 32.63 on Anthony Smyth's mare 'Shanroe Penny'.
To ensure nobody was under the illusion it was just luck, the Antrim-born rider also took second place on Judith Sossick's 'Loughview Lou Lou'.
Afterwards the former Irish Junior European team rider said: "It's been a fantastic two days at Ravensdale, and I've won a few classes, but to take first and second in the HSI Guidam Tour was really the icing on the cake. I'm really delighted." Junior and Young Rider Chef D'Equip Commandant John Ledingham was also at Ravensdale today to watch the young riders in action with a view to future selection for international team selection. He will surely be taking note of the winning rider. He said " The HSI Guidam Tour is a great opportunity to see the young riders and there horses in action "
Fifteen horses went through to the Grand Prix jump-off at the Ravensdale Equestrian Centre from a startlist of 48.
Third place was shared with Delyth Collins on Ronnie Hollinger's Creevagh Duca Diamond and Eoin Gallagher on Java Magic owned by Dermot Lennon, both were clear in an identical time of 36.82.
Equestrian Journalist Tara Dunne put in good round to take 5th on Siobhan Dunne's Evita, her time was 36.96. Tara narrowly missed out on having two in the jump off when her other horse An Cailin Aoibh broke to trot just before the last parallel on the track and try as she might couldn't make it clear to the finish having a crashing 4 faults at that last obstacle. John Floody who was one of the first to go in the jump off took 6th place with a steady but clear round in a time of 42.67 on Tony Nobles Slightly Bonkers.
In 7th place was a very well turned out John Higgins on John Higgins Seniors Flaming Star with 4 faults in a time of 33.37, Johns groom Carrie Cotton received a super watch sponsored by Fitzpatrick Promotions Ltd for her efforts. And in Eighth place was John Floody on Jim Monks Ashbourne with four faults in a time of 33.62.

 | | SJI and EI Launch Joint Membership Package | |

| | 2.JPG)
ShowjumpingIreland and Eventing Ireland are delighted to announce a joint membership package which will give members of both organisations discounted membership and registration packages. This initiative was brought about through discussions by both bodies as to how to create enhanced membership benefits on certain categories of registration. ShowjumpingIreland recognises that in the current climate, value for money is all important and will be actively looking at ways of improving the benefits associated with membership of the Association for all categories of member. More and more members are now crossing between both organisations and we feel this will help to give more Eventing Ireland members access to the services of SJI through the recording of jumping history which would not have been previously available when using Temporary Tickets. We also hope this will help the equine business as a whole, as many horses switch disciplines and this should stimulate the market by working to provide for better training standards in flatwork and jumping. Eventing Ireland also views this as an opportunity for riders and owners to find a new market for horses and will help in the improvements of standards. Many owners have interests in both disciplines and this should help make Equestrian Sport more attractive and less expensive. It is becoming an increased requirement for High Performance Eventing riders to compete in high level show jumping as part of their training regime and this is a perfect opportunity for them. Eventing Ireland Chairman John Wright is looking forward to what the new initiative will bring; ‘’We are very appreciative of the far sightedness and cooperation of ShowjumpingIreland in putting this together. We are delighted to be offering a reciprocal package to SJI members who wish to broaden their equestrian experience.’’ ShowjumpingIreland Chairman Ronan Corrigan believes this will prove as a major benefit to members of both organisations; ‘’This was given a unanimous vote of confidence at a meeting of the Management and Finance committee on Tuesday. We feel this will be a beneficial scheme to SJI members as it will offer alternate activities and will provide a benefit to Eventing Ireland members by providing a discounted early in the year as many do not register with us until late in the year. ’’ Details can be obtained on the Joint Membership package by visiting www.sji.ie, www.eventingireland.com or by contacting ShowjumpingIreland or Eventing Ireland.
